The death of Premier Levi Eshkol was called today “a real tragedy for Israel at a time when internal unity is essential for the nation’s strength” by Dr. Nahum Goldmann. World Jewish Congress president and for many years World Zionist Organization president. Dr. Goldmann spoke at a memorial meeting at the Park Ave. Synagogue which concluded the 30-day mourning period for Mr. Eshkol. Other participants in the memorial session, which was sponsored by the Jewish Agency–American Section, were Rehaveam Amir, Israel’s Consul General in New York; Dr. Emanuel Neumann, Section chairman, who presided; Rabbi Israel Miller, American Zionist Council chairman; and Dr. Judah Nadich, rabbi of the synagogue, who conducted the service attended by over 1,000, Dr. Goldmann said that Israel today needs Eshkol’s “genius to achieve unity when Israel has to assume a difficult stance on the external front.” Cooperating with the Jewish Agency in the event were the Zionist Council, Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, New York Board of Rabbis, United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, Israel Bond Organization and United Israel Appeal.
