A United Nations spokesman said today that Secretary General U Thant has no plans to meet with his special Middle East envoy, Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring, during Mr. Thant’s current week-long stay in Geneva, which ends Thursday. It was reported last week that Dr. Jarring, who is vacationing in the south of Sweden, would be available on “short notice” if Mr. Thant summoned him. The Secretary General, who is attending meetings of the UN’s Economic and Social Council, conceded at today’s opening session that the world organization has shown an “inability to turn the dissensions and power neuroses of nations into common and constructive endeavors for mankind” and a “failure to pacify two theaters of conflict–the Middle East and Southeast Asia.” Mr. Thant met Saturday for 40 minutes with King Faisal of Saudi Arabia on the Mideast and on other matters described by a spokesman as of mutual interest.
