Farber Urges UN to Get Soviets out of Mideast and for Administration to Sell Israel Jets

United Nations Secretary General U Thant was urged today “to work for the immediate removal of Soviet troops, technicians, pilots and advisors in the Middle East.” The demand came from Barry Farber, Republican-Liberal candidate for Congress from Manhattan. Mr. Farber said “There’s a growing world-wide clamor for all troops to return to their nation of origin. It’s hypocritical and dangerous to clamor exclusively for an American pullout from Asia and ignore the Soviet build-up in the Middle East against Israel. The Soviets are moving into the Middle East to the tune of deafening silence from those we thought were most thunderously opposed to foreign troops provoking war in distant lands.” Mr. Farber added “the Soviet intervention threatens not just Israel but the immediate interests of the United States and the peace of the planet.” He called upon the administration to allow Israel to buy all the jets and other armaments needed to insure for survival and to use every diplomatic initiative to bring both sides to the peace table without an imposed agenda or conditions. Mr. Farber emphasized he imputes no sinister motive to those who call for immediate American withdrawal from Vietnam, but say nothing about Russian adventuring in the Middle East. “But why limit it to Vietnam. Why not take the same octane of indignation and deliver it to Moscow before the Middle East becomes a bigger tragedy than Vietnam.”
