The United Jewish Appeal of Greater Washington announced today the establishment of a United Jewish Endowment Fund as a “non-profit public foundation serving the philanthropic needs of the Jewish community locally and overseas.” In a letter circulated to Washington area Jews, Fund chairman Carl M. Freeman said that “through wills, bequests, gifts and endowments you will have an opportunity to participate in the efforts to provide continuity and growth of services available to Jewish communities at home and abroad,” The letter added that “Like similar endowment funds in other cities, ours will seek to enrich and perpetuate Jewish life by supporting educational, cultural, religious and welfare projects here and in Israel.” Meyer H. Brissman, UJA executive director. said that similar foundations have been established in the last dozen years in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Baltimore, Miami, Detroit, Philadelphia, Cleveland and other cities.
