Foreign Minister Maurice Schumann met with Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Hafez Ismail for nearly two hours yesterday, reportedly to work out a joint Franco-Egyptian approach on the Middle East at the forthcoming session of the UN General Assembly. According to reliable sources, the two ministers agreed to a position in which France would end sort Egypt’s call for an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories and would also stress the necessity to renew the Four Power joint efforts to find a solution to the Middle East conflict. Neither diplomat would comment. The Egyptian minister said later that bilateral Franco-Egyptian relations were also discussed. A more detailed discussion of the economic aspects of relations between the two countries was believed to have been put off until later this month when an Egyptian trade mission is expected in France.
