Jewish youth organizations here opened a campaign today to arouse public opinion to the plight of Jews in Syria and to get the government to intervene with the Damascus regime on their behalf. The Jewish students organization in Munich sent letters to President Gustav Heinemann. Chancellor Willy Brandt and other officials declaring that the world must not “keep silent” in face of what is happening to Jews in Syria.
Jewish students in most West German universities distributed leaflets and letters of protest which German students were asked to sign and send to Syrian authorities. Jewish youth representatives met with leaders of the Jewish-Christian Society which holds its annual planning meeting next week. They discussed the possibility of action by the Society on behalf of Syrian Jews. Werner Nachmann, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany said the youth organizations had his full support in their campaign.
