Tension continued to mount today along Israel’s northern borders. Three terrorists were killed in a clash with an Israeli patrol in Upper Galilee last night and a number of mortar shells were fired from Lebanese territory at Manera settlement. No Israeli casualties or damage was reported in either incident. The terrorists were identified as part of a gang that fired Katyusha rocket shells at Safad early yesterday morning. A resurgence of terrorist activity began last week when a Defense Ministry employs on an inspection tour of construction work was murdered and mutilated by terrorist infiltrates from Syria.
Israeli sources said Lebanese authorities appeared to be taking measures against the terrorists operating from their territory. They have increased night patrols along the border but have not been very successful so far in preventing terrorist incursions into Israel. The Syrians on the other hand are believed to have aided the terrorists. However, according to Israeli circles, the Syrians have exercised some restraint since the murder for fear of Israeli retaliation.
