The Jewish-Danish writer, Mrs. Hanne Kaufmann, today threatened to resign both from the Danish Writers Union and from her vice-presidentship of that Union if a decision to withhold protect against the Soviet authorities was not cancelled. The Danish Writers Union had intended protesting to the Soviet authorities over the jailing of the Soviet dissident writer Vladimir K. Bukovsky.
However, when the Danish Communist writer Georg Gydde, protested, the Danish Writers Union capitulated and decided not to send the petition in favor of Bukovsky to the USSR. “I shall not remain in a union which is afraid of fighting for the freedom of other writers,” Mrs. Kaufmann stated. Several days ago Bukovsky was convicted in Moscow on charges of anti-Soviet agitation and sentenced to seven years in prison and five years of exile.
