The British Government today welcomed Israel’s announcement that it is ready to participate in proximity talks with Egypt. A statement issued by the Foreign Office today said, “We welcome the outcome of the talks between the United States and Israel. Our attitude to an Interim arrangement for the reopening of the Suez Canal was stated by the Foreign Secretary. Sir Alec Douglas-Home, in Ankara on April 30, 1971, when he said that an interim arrangement for the reopening of the Suez Canal would help reduce tension in the Middle East and break the present deadlock but it should be a step towards a comprehensive settlement and not an end in itself.”
