Several hundred scholars, students and supporters of the work of YIVO gathered here today to launch the Institute’s 46th annual conference. The opening session of the conference, whose theme is “A Century of Higher Jewish Learning,” featured a presentation on this subject by Dr. Zvi Ankori, of the Hebrew University and director of the Center for Jewish and Israeli studies at Columbia University. He predicted that future Jewish historiography will stress topography (Jewish quarters and cities), population and economic studies, as well as the holocaust, Israel and Zionism and the American Jewish community. Chaim Grade, the poet and critic, discussed “Young Vilna,” a group of writers and artists between the two world ware, who though deeply affected by the Soviet experiment were disillusioned by the Moscow trials.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
