The Spanish Organization for Scientific Research, the country’s leading State-controlled scientific unit, has organized an Institute for Sephardic Research–an activity that has been maintained quietly for some years. The “Institute Arias Montana” is independent of the Israelite Council of Jewish Communities and is supported by the Fine Arts Ministry. It employs mainly non-Jews in such fields as Hebrew, Arabic, Jewish life and Sephardic folklore.
Three months ago the Israelite Council lauded the Institute for its efforts in helping revive Jewish and Sephardic life on the Iberian Peninsula. The president of the European Sephardic Federation, El Nachmias, joined with the Spanish Jewish community in offering this praise. One of the Institute’s publications is “Sefarad,” which deals with the ethnic, cultural, linguistic, anthropological and sociological aspects of Jewish life.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
