The synagogue in the port city of Trieste was vandalized over the weekend, it was learned here today. Jewish community spokesmen attributed the vandalism to neo-Fascist and anti-Semitic gangs that have profaned synagogues throughout Italy recently. The synagogue at Gorizia was vandalized on April 25. Tombstones of Jews in many Trieste area cemeteries have been smeared or toppled.
Sergio Piperno, president of the Italian Jewish Communities Association, cabled a sharp protest today to Premier Giulio Andreotti. Piperno denounced the “vile and criminal aggression against the Trieste synagogue” and asked “energetic government action” to apprehend the culprits. He said the government must protect “holy sites which are the patrimony of the Italian people as a whole,” and he denounced the current rash of anti-Semitic publications across the country.
