There are about 20,000 drug abusers in Israel, according to Dr. R. Meyer, a government psychiatrist who addressed a pilot meeting of volunteers here last week. The volunteers, headed by Mrs. Ruth Dayan, former wife of Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, intends to establish a drive against drug abuse by setting up an information center, first aid stations and a clinic for drug addicts. The volunteers are seeking to implement preventative techniques among youngsters who are exposed to drugs. The use of illegal drugs may be the main cause for the recent crime wave in Israel, speakers at the meeting said.
