Rabbi Meir Kahane, leader of the Jewish Defense League, who was picked up for questioning on Sunday and held for 48 hours, was remanded in custody for four more days today as police pursued their investigation of arms smuggling by the JDL. Three other persons detained in connection with the smuggling attempts were released on bail.
Amitai Paglin, a former Irgun leader, was freed on $7000 bail and his passport was confiscated. Paglin owns a workshop at which, police contended, the smuggled arms were crated for shipment abroad. Abraham Hershkovits, 28, a JDL member, arrested at Lod Airport with the weapons crate two weeks ago, was released on $9000 bail and another JDL member, Vladek Hochhauser, was released on $500 bail.
Police refused to release Rabbi Kahane in order to keep him from making contact with JDL members who are believed to be preparing to leave the country. Rabbi Kahane has a temporary residence permit valid until 1974 and has applied for Israeli citizenship. His application is under consideration by the Interior Ministry.
