The DAIA warned today that certain quarters were trying to sow alarm, panic and confusion In the Jewish community by spreading rumors that terrorists were planning mass kidnappings of Jewish children and a “pogrom” this month. The DAIA, the central representative body of Argentine Jewry, identified the “Israelite Association” as the group which reportedly publicized these rumors at a recent press conference. The Association was described by the DAIA as an extreme left-wing group which, while professing concern for Jewish safety, spreads Arab propaganda.
The DAIA said that rumors and telephone threats against the Jews have in fact multiplied recently and said the authorities have been alerted. But the DAIA warned the Jewish leadership and Institutions not to let themselves be misled by rumors and threats which are a tactic of provocation and hate mongering.
The rumors, which have been circulating anonymously for the past two weeks, claim that 200 Jewish children will be kidnapped in Buenos Aires during Oct. by an extremist Arab organization, and that a “pogrom” will be unleashed on Jews in the capital. According to DAIA, some Jewish pupils have been warned of “pogrom day” which was due today by their schoolmates.
