An expression of solidarity for Israel by the American Jewish community in the face of the Arab invasion on Yom Kippur was voiced at a combined emergency meeting yesterday of the Executive of the American Section of the World Zionist Organization with the leadership of the American Zionist Federation and presidents of Zionist groups. With Mrs. Charlotte Jacobson, chairman of the WZO-American Section presiding, it was decided high priority be given to efforts to raise immediate cash for Israel through the $100 million cash collection campaign of the United Jewish Appeal and the stepping up of the sale of Israel Bonds.
The Jewish Agency-WZO office in Jerusalem informed the American Executive that volunteers for civilian service are needed and sought to work on kibbutzim. These will be processed by the American Zionist Youth Foundation for minimum six month programs, with the volunteers to go at their own expense. It was also reported that Israel authorities said there is no immediate need for medical volunteers or blood banks. The Zionists pledged full cooperation, with all community efforts for the mobilization of American Jewry in behalf of these efforts to aid Israel.
The American-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., announced today that airlines are flying into and from Israel and are accepting passengers and freight. Shipping, telegraphic, telex and postal services are normal. The international telephone service is crowded, with non-priority calls on a waiting list for several hours.
