President Ephraim Katzir has offered his auspices to establish an advisory council to strengthen cultural and spiritual ties between Israel and world Jewry. The President spoke at the conclusion of a special three day seminar held at his residence here on the impact of the Yom Kippur War on world Jewry. It was attended by Jewish intellectuals and academicians from Israel and abroad.
Katzir said the fundamental lesson learned from the war was that Jews share a common fate wherever they are. Other speakers suggested that the best way to win Israel support in intellectual circles is to bring academicians here and “let them see for themselves.” Prof. Maurice Freedman and Sir Isaiah Berlin, of Oxford University, criticized Israel’s attempts to win over students on campuses by implying that the right was all on Israel’s side. They said that experience had shown that the good opinion of non-Jewish academicians who had visited Israel was more important than propaganda.
