Israeli Ambassador Yosef Tekoah, reacting to Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy’s speech, told reporters: “The acrimony, arrogance and hostility permeating the statement is a clear indication of how detrimental public polemics are to efforts to achieve understanding and peace between Israel and the Arab states.” He noted that it was “regrettable” that Fahmy had nothing constructive to say that “might have contributed to the relaxation of tension in the Middle East” and instead only served to further poison the atmosphere.
