A high Israeli official at the Israel Mission to the UN denied charges by Czechoslovakia that Israel officially committed itself at the UN to support Sudeten German claims against Czechoslovakia. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s London-bureau was informed by a spokesman for the international Council of Jews from Czechoslovakia that the Slovak Radio charged Israeli Ambassador Chaim Herzog had advised the chairman of the Sudeten Council that “the Israeli delegation will be pleased to support your case at the UN.”
Responding to JTA questions about this allegation, the Israel UN Mission official stated: “The government of Israel does not support the Sudeten claims against Czechoslovakia. Due to a clerical error, a letter was sent by mistake to the Sudeten organization, which could have been interpreted as Israeli support for their cause., Immediately thereafter, when the error was discovered, a letter was sent cancelling the first letter and a confirming cable was dispatched re-emphasizing the fact that the government of Israel did not support the Sudeten request.”
