Former Israeli Premier Golda Meir will receive the American labor movement’s highest award for public service, AFL-CIO president George Meany has announced. She will receive the award and a $500 check at a dinner in Washington May 20. The award honors the memory of Philip Murray, late president of the CIO, and William Green, late president of the AFL. “All the goals that Green and Murray fought for throughout their lives have been–and are–the goals of Golda Meir,” Meany said. “She has fought for freedom all her life, defended human dignity with unquenchable determination, and helped create, against tremendous odds, the unique, free labor movement of Israel.”
