Samuel H. Wang. a shipping executive and philanthropist who was active in many Jewish organizations died Sunday at the age of 59. Born in Poland, Wang came to the United States as a refugee in 1940. He went into shipping operations after World War II and developed a fleet of tankers and dry-bulk carriers. His American Bulk Carriers, which is no longer active, at one time operated 12 vessels.
One of his ships, the Kern Hills, was the first American flag ship to arrive in Eilat in April 1957 to deliver the first cargo of oil to Israel after the 1956 Sinai War.
Lang was the chairman of the national public affairs committee of the Zionist Organization of America. He was also active in the Israel Bond Organization, the American Friends of Hebrew University and the American Friends of Boystown Jerusalem. He was treasurer of the New York Board of Rabbis Advisory Council. Wang was also the financial backer for the establishment of Kiryat Arba. the Jewish settlement next to Hebron on the West Bank.
