Robert I. Lipton, a Durham attorney and a vice-president of B’nai B’rith who was active in the organization for 31 years, died here today of a heart attack. He would have been 56 on Saturday. Lipton was a member of the B’nai B’rith International Board of Governors since 1964 and two years ago was named chairman of the organization’s members insurance program.
He was also a past president of District 5, an area ranging from Maryland to Florida, and a former member of the B’nai B’rith Youth Commission. From 1952 to 1954 he was chairman of North Carolina’s United Jewish Appeal. Lipton was a native of New York City but lived most of his life in North Carolina, graduating from the University of North Carolina and its law school. He joined B’nai B’rith in 1946, after receiving his law degree.
