The Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation has petitioned the West German parliament to rescind the statute of limitations on the prosecution of Nazi war criminals, which goes into effect on December 31, 1979. They called it a loophole through which Nazi murderers could escape justice. The statute of limitations law originally became effective 20 years after the commission of a crime. It was extended to 30 years at the insistence of organizations of Nazi victims, who noted that many wanted war criminals have managed to evade arrest. They are now pressing for a further extension or outright abolition of the statute in war crimes cases.
