S.L. Schneiderman, the writer and past president of the Yiddish Pen Center, mode a passionate appeal to start a worldwide Hoveve Yiddish ( “Friends of Yiddish”) movement, patterned on the historic Hoveve Zion movement of the end of the last century. This movement of “Friends of the Yiddish language and literature should embrace secular as well as religious Jews of every conviction who have a sentiment for Yiddish, the language of our martyred brethren, he said.
Speaking at the banquet at the Roosevelt Hotel celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Jewish Cultural Congress in which over 500 representatives of various, Jewish organizations in New York and out side New York participated, Schneiderman warned.
“We are the last generation of Yiddish-speaking Jews who have the duty to preserve the values of the Yiddish civilization that has produced a great literature that achieved the highest recognition of the Nobel committee in Sweden that has awarded the 1978 literary prize to the Yiddish novelist Isaac Bashevis Singer.” Julius Schatz director of the Commission on Jewish Life and Culture of the American Jewish Congress, states in the name of AJCongress president Howard Squadron, that, his organization is supporting the movement for Friends of Yiddish.”
