Israel is preparing for the historic occasion next month when Israel and Egypt will declare their borders open for the free movement of civilians between the two countries. While the army is readying the first phase of its withdrawal from Sinai, Israeli workers are building a large new terminal at Ne’ot Sinai, close to EI Arish which will serve as a customs inspection and border control point until the withdrawal is completed in three years.

In anticipation of a rush of tourists from both sides the new terminal has been designed on spacious lines with all necessary conveniences and utilities. A similar terminal is contemplated at a point near Sharmel-Sheikh in southern Sinai for tourists wishing to cross the border there. The open borders will be declared late in May after EI Arish is formally returned to Egyptian sovereignty.
