Violence triggered by a Meir Kahane demonstration in Ramallah yesterday left one local youth shot and wounded by soldiers and four others hurt. The military authorities said last night that they were seeking Kahane with a view to arresting him. Meanwhile, they arrested 11 Ramallah residents who took part in counter demonstrations against Kahane’s Kach movement and its followers.

The incident followed a three-day general strike which shut down business in Ramallah and raised tensions in the town. Mayor Karim Khallaf protested strongly over the arrests of the townspeople while Kahane’s men had been allowed to get away.

The strike was called in Ramallah to protest the smashing of dozens of car windows there last week by four Gush Emunim settlers who were arrested. Kahane’s rally yesterday supported the settlers’ action and demanded their release.
