Bir Zeit College on the West Bank reopened today with a new outburst of violence by students protesting its week-long closure by the Military Government.

Youths took to the streets, stoning Israeli vehicles. Security forces, rushed to the scene, fired into the air and forced them back into the buildings. Soldiers surrounded the campus. By early afternoon, the Military Governor reportedly agreed to let the students leave but the name of each was taken down by the army.

The college was closed a week ago to enforce a ban on “Palestine Week,” an annual campus event which the Israeli authorities considered nationalistic and provocative. The closure sparked a wave of unrest on the West Bank.” Last week Israeli troops opened fire on demonstrators in Ramallah and El Bireh, wounding II.
