Political unrest on the West Bank intensified last weekend as Arabs marked the May 15 anniversary date of the establishment of the State of Israel.

High school students in Ramallah and El Bira, as well as students from the Bir Zeit University, set up roadblocks and hurled stones at passing vehicles. Security forces dispersed the demonstrators. No one was injured and no one was arrested. Similar demonstrations took place at the Kalandiya refugee camp near Jerusalem and in Bethlehem.

A Jerusalem resident was attacked last Friday night in his car by an Arab youth in the Abu Tor district of East Jerusalem. The man was slightly injured and his car’s windows were smashed. Last Thursday night, two Molotov cocktails were thrown at army patrols in El Bira and in the Deheisha refugee camp near Bethlehem. There were no injuries or damage. Several suspects were detained.
