Wives of policemen caused chaos to Tel Aviv traffic when they demonstrated outside the main police station on busy Dizengoff Street today. The women, shouting slogans and waving banners, were demanding higher salaries for their husbands who, as uniformed policemen, are not allowed to organize or go on strike.

They had obtained a license to hold a quiet demonstration on the sidewalk outside the police station. But they began crossing the roadway on a pedestrian crossing and would not allow traffic to move on the roadway. The women were finally persuaded to leave the crossing by a group of senior police officers, who admitted they found removing the wives of colleagues a most unpleasant business.
