The Chicago City Council, by a vote of 43-2, adopted a resolution urging the United States to assist in rescuing and resettling the Falashas, the Jews of Ethiopia.
The resolution noted that “The Ethiopian Jews are amongst the oldest continuous Jewish communities in existence” and that “This ancient group is in danger of actual physical extinction unless immediate assistance is forthcoming from a generous and powerful country like the United States” which “has always been a haven for the persecuted and downtrodden of other countries…”
The City Council resolved to “urge President Reagan and the Congress to take all steps necessary to assist the Ethiopian Jews and to use all available resources to make freedom, rescue and resettlement of these people possible.”
