Five Israeli students will participate, along with 50 high school students from 46 states in the United States, at the Rickover Summer Science Institute (RSI) which will hold its first courses from July 8 to August 18 in Leesburg, Va., it was announced here by Dr. Mordecai Hacohen, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Admiral H.G. Rickover Foundation. The Israeli students were selected by a panel of outstanding Israeli educators, Hacohen told a press conference here.

He identified the students as: Shaya Abramson, 11th grade, of Beersheba; Omri Gat, 11th grade, of Haifa; Tali Cohen, 11th grade, of Rishon Le Zion; Yonathan Nemirowski, 11th grade, Haifa; and Alexander Smorodnizki, 12th grade, Jerusalem.

Admiral Hyman Rickover, the “father of the nuclear navy” and the first Jewish Admiral in the history of the U.S., told the press conference, “I share with you a proud moment in history, that five students from Israel will be among the first RSI scholars.”

Hacohen said that these students “were selected for excellence in their studies and also for their participation in extra-curricular academic activities and their capacity to be worthy good-will ambassadors of Israel.”

The RSI, a program of the Rickover Foundation, a non-profit organization, has been established to foster development of the intellectual and practical skills of gifted and talented youth in mathematics and science. The RSI will be the first summer science program to offer residential classroom training with off-campus internships under the direction of professional research science mentors, Hacohen said.

Students will receive advanced instruction in the biological and natural sciences and math. These courses will be complemented by two “skills” courses in scientific writing and computer programming. Classes will be at the Xerox International Center for Training and Management Development.
