Premier Yitzhak Shamir charged yesterday that the nations of the world are conducting a “libelous propaganda campaign” against Israel’s designation of Jerusalem as its capital. He spoke at a rally marking the 17th anniversary of the city’s reunification.

This will end, just as “the fences and barricades dividing the city disappeared,” Shamir said. The Knesset devoted part of its session today to the anniversary. Knesset Speaker Menachem Savidor praised Mayor Teddy Kollek of Jerusalem for urging cooperation among the many communities that live in the capital.

Jerusalem Day festivities ended this evening with a song fest at the Sultan’s Pool outside the Old City walls. Dozens of other events were held during the day, including a memorial ceremony for soldiers who died in the 1967 Six Day War.
