President Clinton and U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright spoke about the importance of religious freedom while attending separate services at Protestant churches in Beijing. “As one who was a child in war-torn Europe,” said Albright, “I’m convinced that the free exercise of those values can help sustain us all.” China has come under criticism in recent years for suppressing religious freedom.
