NEW YORK, July 23 (JTA) — The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany is preparing to give its annual grants to institutions that aid Holocaust survivors. “The principal objective of these grants is to assist in the expansion and improvement of services to elderly victims of the Nazis, many of whom are frail and needy,” said Israel Miller, president of the Claims Conference. Applications are due Sept. 18. Individual grants range from $5,000 to $2 million, depending on the size and nature of the project the social service institution is providing to its clients. Institutions providing shelter and social services to needy Holocaust survivors, and organizations that engage in research, documentation and education about the Holocaust are eligible to apply. Last year, more than $58 million was awarded in grants worldwide. The Claims Conference gave some $30 million to 60 Israeli groups and about $6 million to 30 organizations in the United States.
