President Clinton asked the thousands of people attending an annual prayer breakfast in Washington to pray for the world’s “peacemakers.” He then singled out Yasser Arafat and the leaders of Israel. His reference to the Palestinian leader appeared aimed at confronting the controversy surrounding the invitation that had been extended to Arafat to attend the breakfast. Clinton had a brief meeting with Arafat after the breakfast, but details of their discussion were not immediately available.
