Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak canceled a trip to Washington and postponed peace negotiations in Stockholm because of violence in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon. Barak also called on the Palestinian Authority to take steps to end the violence, which has now lasted nine days. Meanwhile, the United States proposed over the weekend that Israel and the Palestinians hold a summit next month to prepare the way for a final peace deal by mid-September.
