A controversy erupted in Germany after former Chancellor Helmut Kohl compared his treatment by the governing Social Democrats to the Nazi persecution of the Jews. Other politicians lashed out at him after Kohl said that calls by a leading Social Democrat to boycott his fund-raising efforts resembled the Nazi- era boycott of Jewish shops. Kohl is trying to raise funds to pay fines recently imposed on him for his having accepted secret political gifts when he was chancellor.
