The spiritual leader of the fervently Orthodox Shas Party may give the party’s 17 legislators freedom to vote their conscience when the Knesset elects Israel’s next president later this month. The move would leave the outcome a toss-up between the two candidates, former Prime Minister Shimon Peres of the Labor Party and Likud Party legislator Moshe Katsav.
