The Vatican called off plans to have a day commemorating interfaith dialogue after the chief rabbi of Rome reportedly refused to attend. Elio Toaff and his deputy refused to take part in the Oct. 3 event because of a recent document that said other religions are not equal to Roman Catholicism and because of the recent beatification of the controversial 19th-century Pope Pius IX.
