Israel permitted Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat to drive through Jerusalem on Christmas Eve after difficult weather conditions prevented his helicopter from taking off from Bethlehem, where he had attended holiday services. Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert described Israel’s move as a “humanitarian gesture.”
