United States officials blamed Hezbollah for a cycle of attacks in Israel and Lebanon in recent days. While issuing the familiar call to “end the cycle of violence in the Middle East,” White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that a Hezbollah attack over the weekend that left one Israeli soldier dead was a “clear provocation designed to escalate an already-tense situation.”
