Israeli soldiers with tanks and bulldozers briefly entered a Palestinian-ruled area east of Rafah in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. The soldiers destroyed a police position that Israel said had been used as a base for gunfire directed at Israeli forces and Jewish settlers.
