Preventive surgery reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancers in women with gene mutations that are common among Ashkenazi Jews, according to a new study. In the study, only seven women with the BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 mutations out of 101 who had their ovaries and fallopian tubes removed had these cancers or later developed it, compared with 13 women among 72 who did not have the surgery.
