Israel reacted angrily to a speech by the Palestinian Authority foreign minister advocating the “right of return.” The minister, Nabil Sha’ath, said in Beirut that Palestinian refugees from Israel’s 1948 War of Independence, and their descendants, have the right to return to their former homes, “whether in Haifa or Nablus.” Israeli officials said in response that “there is no such thing as the right of return in international law,” and that Israel will not agree to a Palestinian return.
