Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will not bequeath power to his son. In remarks to Egyptian TV broadcast Jan. 1, Mubarak, 75, said Egypt was a republic and dismissed rumors he was grooming his son Gamal to succeed him. Gamal Mubarak, formerly a businessman, has risen rapidly in recent years in his father’s National Democratic Party.
