A U.N. anti-racism panel will question Israel over a controversial dig in Jerusalem’s Old City. The panel questioned Israel’s dedication to protecting sites sacred to religions other than Judaism. The move appears to stem from the renovation of a staircase leading to the Temple Mount, which was followed by Palestinian and Muslim rioting to avert what they claim are Israeli plots against the Muslim shrines. Israeli authorities say the project does not threaten the integrity of the site. Israeli officials are expected to appear before the panel later this week.
