French resistance hero Lucie Aubrac died in Paris, her daughter said. She died Wednesday at 94. Aubrac was known for helping her
husband, Raymond Samuel, escape from the Gestapo after he was arrested in June 1943 along with Jean Moulin, another high-ranking resistance
member. Pregnant with her second child, Aubrac and other resistance leaders freed her
husband and 13 other members of the movement during a prison transfer
A history teacher, Aubrac joined the resistance against German occupation in 1940 and participated in the creation of the “South
liberation” movement. After her husband’s escape, the couple fled to London,
where they stayed until the end of the war.
In 1984 Aubrac published her memoirs, first with “Outwitting the Gestapo,” which was made into a film, and in 2000 with “Explaining the Resistance to my Grandchildren.”
Socialist leader Segolene Royal praised Aubrac as “a true heroine of the republic.”
