Report: Lebanon swap imminent

A major prisoner exchange between Israel and Hezbollah is reportedly months away.

Citing diplomatic sources, the London-based newspaper Al-Hayat reported Wednesday that a U.N.-mediated deal under which Israel would recover two soldiers abducted by the Lebanese militia last July is expected to be clinched by the end of this summer.

According to the report, Israel would free a considerable number of Arab prisoners, among them Palestinians, Syrians and Jordanians, in exchange for army reservists Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, kidnapped by Hezbollah in July. The swap has been brokered by a veteran German intelligence agent, codenamed “Meyer,” on behalf of the United Nations, Al-Hayat reported.

Israeli and Lebanese officials had no immediate comment.
