More than one in three residents of Sderot have fled Palestinian shelling from the Gaza Strip.

Citing municipal data, Israel Radio reported Thursday that between 8,000 and 9,000 residents of the southern town have left temporarily in response to the recent surge of rocket barrages. Sderot’s total population is 23,000.

Many of the refugees have availed themselves of Jerusalem hotels paid for by the government, while others have gone to a tent city in Tel Aviv provided by Israeli-Russian billionaire Arkady Gaydamak.
