The umbrella body of Jewish community outreach groups urged its members to back two bills aimed at reducing U.S. dependence on foreign energy sources.
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs is supporting a comprehensive energy package that will be voted on next week by the U.S. House of Represenatives. One bill, the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act, creates incentives for companies and individuals that invest in renewable energy sources, such as installing solar panels or buying hybrid cars. A second bill is a combination of bipartisan measures that include authorizing investment in cellulosic ethanol, directing $3 billion toward the Energy-Water Appropriations bill to combat global warming and setting new efficiency standards for home appliances.
JCPA is also asking its members to support an amendment that would increase the renewable energy standard to 20 percent by 2020.
